(ACTUALIZADO A LA SESION 2) SESIONES DE PULIDO / (UPDATE TO SESSION 2) POLISHING SESIONS /

(SPANISH / ENGLISH )

SESION 1 / 35 MINUTOS. 13/05/2014

SESSION 1 / 35 MINUTES. 13/05/2014

Hello again:

This afternoon I started polishing sessions. Before I made a hot press to the surfaces are tight and in good contact.

In a small bottle I have prepared a mixture of water with cerium oxide in a good proportion of the cerium oxide to be effective polishing.

I have only added a bit of the mixture, spreading it over the surface of the glass before you start polishing.

This work is performed on a table which in turn is supported on a washcloth to spread the effort across the surface and avoid local defects.

To fix the position of the "tool" a wooden board, I installed three pieces of wood placed at angles of 120 degrees.

This polishing session has been "mirror up", or as indicated by specialized books "Mirror On Top" or colloquially "MOT".

I've been polishing by hand for only 35 minutes but changes in the glass surface are appreciable.

The surface is much more regular, rinse with clear edges. This worries me a lot because it indicates that the central part has not had the same contact. You can also end in a deformation ring surface.

Looking towards the surface light source at an appropriate angle can observe and photograph their appearance.

The movements have been polishing or so races one third the diameter of the mirror with slight movements of lateral displacement.

Good night, see you the next post

SESION 2 / 30 MINUTOS 14/05/2014

SESSION 2 / 30 MINUTES 14/05/2014

Hello again:

Today I've been polishing for 30 minutes with the same movements. The result is very satisfactory.

Almost the whole surface is rinsed. Only a small central area is unclear.

It is very interesting that only in an hour polishing has achieved these results.

The surface is so transparent that tomorrow will perform the first test of Foucault to appreciate the roughness of the surface and form.

Good night, see you the next post

NUEVA "TORTA DE PULIDO". NEW PITCH LAP (3)

Hello again :in this post show the difference in the pitch lap status before and after hot pressing , as I said in yesterday's post .

Hot pressing is done after warm pitch lap with very hot water and then put in contact with the glass surface want to polish done on the whole moderate pressure to make the pitch lap deformed adapting to crystal .

I used a bucket of water but can be used object at hand. It is advisable to place a thick cloth on the top surface to the pressure is distributed over the entire surface and not subject the glass and cake to local pressures that can cause breakage.

(PHOTO)
POLISHED GLASS AND PRESSED CAKE FOR A BUCKET FULL OF WATER

Contact Cake polishing the glass was well before hot pressing:

(PHOTO)
ORIGINAL IMAGE(PHOTO)
PREVIOUS HIGHLIGHTING THE SAME PICTURE BUT THE FEW AREAS CONTACT

After hot pressing the result is this:

(PHOTO)
ORIGINAL IMAGE
(PHOTO)
THE SAME PICTURE BUT IN THIS CASE HIGHLIGHTING THE AREAS WHERE NO GOOD CONTACT.

As seen in the image, after pressing, the contact is virtually 100 %, except those areas of the surface of the cake polished slightly depressed or deformed. In this case these areas have been caused by the removal of some areas of the foil before pouring the liquid resin; the glass should be wet before putting the foil, and would achieve the perfectly quedase foil stuck to the glass.

The chamfer (bevel, fillet...) made at the edge of the cake to prevent TDE. I the show this chamfer in the picture below (marked with a black line):

(PHOTO)
INDICATION CHAMFER EDGE CAKE POLISHED

Now we spend about 10 or 12 hours a manual polished glass with very precise movements and care in order to avoid distortion.

In the next posts I will be showing the progress of the polishing

NUEVA "TORTA DE PULIDO". NEW PITCH LAP (2)

Hello again

This afternoon I finished the channels in my pitch lap. They work as independent units with respect to the contact thereof with the glass.

These individual surfaces, formed by the main channels, allow each "square" that we observe can be deformed to fit perfectly to the glass and achieve maximum contact .

This will improve the speed and quality of the polish. To further increase this effect, micro channels are performed on each "small square" in which the polishing agent , in this case cerium oxide, will be retained, thereby achieving the oxide is a long time in contact with the glass during polishing our movements .

These micro-channels are made with the aid of a sharp knife.

After the edge of the cake polishing has been lowered, more or less to achieve a 45 degree chamfer to prevent the outside of the glass suffer excessive polishing that can lead to the dreaded TDE .

Following the completion of the micro channels have supported our glass on the pitch lap to see the quality of the contact mirror - pitch lap. To appreciate this, I have wet the pitch lap and watch the set from a suitable angle, very angled with respect to the light source used (in my case the ceiling light in my kitchen). In this way we can see how the contact between the glass and polished cake is not of good quality, since the total contact area is very little.
To improve it, since it is critical to do so, I used a hot pressing, so I heated the pitch lap with very hot water under a tap and then I pressed the set with a heavy item: a bucket fill of water.

Tomorrow I'll show contact surfaces before and after hot pressing.

Good night, until the next entry.

NUEVA "TORTA DE PULIDO". NEW PITCH LAP (1)

Hello again, one of the good things about the hobby is that they are always there to retake when you fancy. So after a long break I've put "hands-on" to see if I terminate my telescope primary mirror reflector future.

One of the big news is that each paragraph will be translated into English using Google Translate it, who knows more English than I.

The state is the following: after polishing with cerium oxide, I realized that the area had lost its roundness; this forced me to take a few steps back and re-work with silicon carbide abrasive.

So I've been roughing with carbide grain sizes 500, 600 and 1200. Abrasive I have not intermediate between the last two gradings mentioned (I have not been able to locate it), but should not be a problem.

Cake polished above I have taken the resin, detaching the glass I used for support. This glass was actually called "tool."

Usually the cake stand should be polished plaster construction, curing dental cement or plaster to dry, solidified resin, but not to rely on these elements, at the time, I take the glass tool.

This was a big mistake because in this way the tool unusable for possible use during this process, because the cake is brushed adhered thereto.

This time, as seen in the photos, the base used is an aluminum disc that I bought a while for my next project, so the tool is available to carry out corrections shape mirror if necessary.

The steps were: melt the resin, pour it over the glass surface before completely solidify support aluminum base, unmold and then prepare the surface of the cake making appropriate channels (channeling).

To shape and pour the resin on the glass create a paper pattern around it which it then remove it.

We must prevent the resin from sticking to the glass because otherwise it will be impossible unmold the cake; the best way I've found is to put on the glass foil.

As seen in the photo shoot , to make it easy to support the aluminum disk on the resin have shredded the paper mold ; this way when we support the disc, the paper mold opens like a flower allowing it to rest perfectly on the resin.
